The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC) presents its new virtual exhibition, Expressive Forms, a scope to abstraction as an artistic manifestation that transmits emotions, sensuality, and artistic subjectivity. The Puerto Rican María Elena Ortiz curated the show, curator of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), curated the first virtual exhibition of works from the Permanent Collection of the MAC made for the virtual space. Formas expresivas highlights works by contemporary Puerto Rican and Caribbean artists who have been involved with abstraction and minimalism, along with works from other international collections available through the Google Arts & Culture platform.
The exhibition establishes a dialogue between works by Olga Albizu, Lope Max Díaz, Zilia Sánchez, and Julio Suárez with works from other collections, countries, and historical periods that show how abstraction has been a source of inspiration through different cultures and times.
“It is important that more people on the island and the diaspora have the opportunity to appreciate our artists’ work. In my case, this exhibition, in a certain way, presents how abstraction served as an inspiration for Puerto Rican artists through several decades. Museums must always be posing new challenges that take new audiences into account. The digital world is changing rapidly, and the pandemic has made more obvious the need to use digital platforms that provide knowledge networks. I found the exhibition an exciting experiment and a new way to begin to engage with our audience digitally,” stated Ortiz.
Since the MAC began its collaboration with Google last year, the Museum has made part of its collection available online and exhibitions held at its headquarters in Santurce.
