The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art acquires work by Félix González-Torres at Auction Bentonville, Arkansas

A new record for the work of Cuban-American artist Félix González-Torres (1957-1996) was established at Christie's recently concluded November Auction of Contemporary and Post-War Art. González-Torres' Sin título (L.A.), from 1991, was sold for US$7,669,000. It was acquired by Arkansas' Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and it consists of an installation of nearly 50 pounds of candy wrapped in green cellophane, which can be arranged on the floor of the gallery for the audience to pick up and eat. Such interactions are characteristic of González-Torres' work, as he sought to promote the participation of the public. The museum's intention in acquiring this work, as stated in a press release, is "to welcome everyone in a celebration of the American spirit. Being an important work by one of the most influential Latino artists of the Twentieth-Century, Sin Título (L.A.) will make it possible for the Museum to tell a broader story of American art." Sin Título (L.A.) will be on exhibit through the end of 2015.
