The exhibition "Central America: Desire of Place" centered on the work by Costa Rican artist Virginia Pérez-Ratton (San José, 1950–2010) will remain open to the public from June 29, 2019, to January 5, 2020. Regarded as an important promoter of Latin American art, particularly from the Central American region, the exhibition revisits her artistic work, her independent and institutional curatorial projects, as well as her collaborations with other women artists. The show underscores the manner in which her work transformed the ways of reading and writing about the region, in dialog with the global debates and realities of her time. Curated by Miguel A. López and María P. Malavasi, the exhibition intertwines her sensibility as engraver and sculptor with her work as manager, curator, and director of two important contemporary art institutions in Central America: the Museo the arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC) and teor/éTica, both in San José, Costa Rica. Two exhibitions curated by Pérez-Ratton stand out: "MESóTICA II. Central America: Re-Generation" (MADC, Costa Rica, 1996), and "Central America and the Caribbean: A Story in Black and White (24th São Paulo Art Biennial, Brazil, 1988). Additionally, the exhibition features important works by artists who were close to Virginia and part of her curatorial projects. The show also includes a selection of works rarely exhibited by Pérez-Ratton, centered on themes like the landscape, the human figure, domestic environments, intimacy, and memory.
