The Metropolitan Museum of Art Will Start Charging a Mandatory US$25 Admission Fee to Out-Of-State Visitors

Starting March 1, 2018, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York City will begin charging a US$25 admission fee to out-of-state adult visitors. Until now the 25 dollars has only been a suggested fee. In 2017, only 17 percent of visitors actually paid that amount, compared to the 63 percent who did in 2004. MET's president and CEO, Daniel Weiss, said that the museum is committed to remaining accessible to the largest possible number of visitors. The pay-what-you-wish admission policy will continue to be offered to New York residents and students from the states of Connecticut and New Jersey, provided that they show a valid ID that proves their place of residence. Admission will continue to be free for children under the age of 12 while out-of-state adults over the age of 65 will only have to pay US$17. Other New York museums with similar admission fees are the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
