The MAMU Inaugurates “Sembrar la duda”

On October 7th, the Museo de Arte Miguel Urrutia - MAMU inaugurated the exhibition “Sembrar la duda” (Planting Doubt), a show that aims to reflect upon the marginalization of indigenous cultural production in the narratives of art history in Colombia. The exhibition was curated by Sigrid Castañeda, Julien Petit, and María Wills, and its concept runs parallel to a "living curation" carried out by indigenous communities. The exhibition consists of 850 works from the collections of MAMU and the Museo del Oro, including recent acquisitions such as Susana Mejía Villa's "Color Amazonía," Julieth Morales' "Nay Scrap (Tejiendome)," and Julián Dupont's "Potosí, la siniestra inversión de la montaña." In addition to contemporary art, the exhibition encompasses a wide range of works spanning from pre-Hispanic and colonial pieces to those from the 19th century and modern artistic productions.
“Sembrar la duda” has as one of its central objectives to move away from a primitivist perspective and provide new perspectives on indigenous representations. The exhibition is divided into 6 sections that serve as clues to encourage reflections on the inclusion of indigenous practices in the history of art. These sections are: "Identidades" – Explores indigenous identity in plural, highlighting its multiplicity and diversity. "Archipiélago macizo" – Emphasizes the Colombian Massif and the city of Popayán as places that played an unrecognized role in the development of modern art and indigenous political resistance in Colombia. "La imagen fotosensible" – Investigates 19th-century photography as a tool to create distinctions between the indigenous and Western cultures. "Naturaleza Sagrada" – Recognizes the deep connection to the land that exists in the sacred practices of indigenous peoples. "Arte/Sania/Diseño" – Encourages a rethinking of art history from an academic perspective, addressing the systematic omissions of cultural expressions of indigenous peoples. "Anacronías" – Points to the need to break away from chronological narratives of history to explore new narratives of the past.
The exhibition can be visited at the Museo de Arte Miguel Urrutia - MAMU, located at Cl. 11 #4-21, La Candelaria, Bogotá, Cundinamarca.
