MAMBO opens Stigmata: Carlos Motta

On March 16, the Museum of Modern Art of Bogota inaugurated the exhibition "Stigmata: Carlos Motta," curated by Eugenio Viola. Carlos Motta, a Bogotá-born artist based in New York City, is internationally known for a body of work whose common thread is a reflection on the normative discourses of gender and sexuality, the reference of marginal stories, and the construction of political memory.
"Hilos de Sangre" (2023) is the artist's most recent work and was specifically commissioned for this exhibition. This work is the result of intense research on the AIDS epidemic in Colombia, an investigation in collaboration with historian Pablo Beadoya. The stories and documents gathered in "Hilos de Sangre" are exhibited in parallel to "Virosis", an exhibition of more than thirty works by Colombian artists who respond to the HIV/aids epidemic in the country.
This exhibition provides a broad and detailed overview of Motta's work, showing how the artist's production challenges an oppressive tradition by bringing up conversations about social justice and making visible populations marginalized by their dissident sexuality, ethnicity, and gender.
"Stigmata: Carlos Motta" will be on view through June 4, 2023, at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, Calle 24 # 6-00, Bogotá, Colombia.
