The San Francisco Art Institute -SFAI - appoints Okwui Enwezor as dean.

The prestigious art curator, writer and critic will begin his work starting on July 2005, becoming the sixth Dean of Academic Programs (Academic Affairs), in an institution with 133 years of history. The art Institute was founded in 1871 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious centers of higher education of art and design in the United States. Chris Bratton, President of the Institute, highlighted that the important work as curator, writer and professor as well as Okwui Enwenzor¿s international projection is in perfect harmony with institute¿s objectives, since both are committed with artistic creation. On his appointment, Enwenzor expressed that he feels that the SFAI, will offer him an experimental atmosphere, an excellent home for his own intellectual sensitivity and curiosity. Okwui Enwenzor, 41 years old, was born in Kalaba, Nigeria and he settled in New York in 1981 where he studied Political Sciences in Jersey City State College, in Newark, New Jersey. In 1993, he launched the magazine Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, with which he attempted to develop a critical forum on the African artists and the artists of the African Diaspora whose works were outside mainstream publications. A prolific writer, editor and curator, he collaborates with publications such as Frieze, the International Review of African American Art, Flash Art, among others. Enwenzor was the director of Kassel¿s Documenta 11.
