Instituto de Arte Contemporânea( IAC) opens a new permanent space

IAC (Instituto de Arte Contemporânea), founded in 1997 by art gallerist Raquel Arnaud, officially opened permanent headquarters on October 13, 2020 in a five-floor renovated building adjacent to Paulista Avenue, São Paulo, Brazil.
IAC is a private, non-profit organization idealized, founded and presided by art gallerist Raquel Arnaud, founder of the Galeria Raquel Arnaud.
Since its inception in 1997, the institute is a benchmark in the field of documental legacy of leading visual artists from Brazil, specializing in safeguarding, researching and disseminating artistic legacies. With its team of experts and equipment, the institute aims to expand its collections of artistic inventories. IAC is among the cultural institutions integrated in Avenue Paulista’s cultural circuit – Circuito Cultural Paulista – created by the state government.
The institute opens its doors with the collective exhibition “Luzes da Memória” (Lights of Memory) curated by IAC’s head researcher and museologist, Marilucia Bottallo, and Ricardo Resende. The show displays never before exhibited works of the IAC Collection by Brazilian artists Antonio Dias, Carmela Gross, Iole de Freitas, Ivan Serpa, Jorge Wilheim, Rubem Rodolf and Sérvulo Esmeraldo. Running through December 20, 2020, the exhibition is open to the public.
“At the time it amounted to eighteen years I represented Camargo’s work so his heirs thought best to entrust me all the documents and projects of the artist’s estate. The cultural heritages of two major names such as Willys de Castro and Sergio Camargo suddenly in my hands was to me a clear sign of a new phase in my career and the inspiration that led me to set up the Instituto de Arte Contemporânea (IAC) in 1997”, recalls Ms. Arnaud, president of IAC.
Artistic estates under the institute’s guardianship with catalogued and digitized data currently online at the IAC website are: Willys de Castro (1926-1988), Sergio Camargo (1930-1990), Amilcar de Castro (1920-2002), Servulo Esmeraldo (1929-2017), Lothar Charoux (1912-1987), Luiz Sacilotto (1924-2003), Hermelindo Fiaminghi (1920-2004) and Iole de Freitas (1945). More recently IAC was entrusted with the estates of Ivan Serpa (1923-1973), Carmela Gross (1946), Antonio Dias (1944-2018), Rubem Ludolf (1932-2010) and architect Jorge Wilheim (1928-2014).
IAC launched In May 21, 2020, the book “Encontros Fundamentais – IAC 20 anos” (Fundamental Encounters – IAC 20 years), published in partnership with UBU Editions, designed by Elaine Ramos. On September 30, 2020, the institute launched the bilingual book “mis piedras – Sergio Camargo: ateliês 1950-1990” (my stones – Sergio Camargo: studios 1950-1990) with photos, studies, poems and excerpts on the reflections of Sergio Camargo and this unique artist’s studio practices.
