Colombian artist María Berrío (b. 1982) presents her work from February 16 through August 6, 2023 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
Berrío creates large scale paintings using a collage process of Japanese paper strokes with watercolor. The scenes she creates address social and political realities that are merged with poetry, folklore and magic. In her work, the artist proposes new imaginary interpretations for the current contexts of immigrants, women and children.
The exhibition María Berrío: The children's crusade exhibits a selection of works of the same title of the show. The presentation combines, on the one hand, the history of the Children's Crusade of 1212, which according to various legends traveled through Italy and France to convert Muslims to Christianity, and, on the other hand, the massive movement of people across borders.
Thus, in this project the Colombian artist re-imagines migrant children through hybrid figures between humans and animals, as well as birds that deal with notions such as freedom, control, protection, displacement, loss, among others. Her works include nature scenes and detailed landscapes in which the artist frames her fictional stories, turning her pieces into paintings that resemble stories accompanied by narrative texts. Berrío materializes her interest in the relationship between humans and nature by presenting different children linked to nature and animals.
