"The Spirit of Painting," Exhibition by Cai Guo-Qiang at the Museo del Prado

Beginning on October 25, 2017 and until March 4, 2018, the Museo del Prado will present the exhibition titled "The Spirit of Painting" by Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang (Quanzhou, 1957). Interested in European artistic tradition, Cai Guo-Qiang regards masters represented in the Museo del Prado like Titian, Rubens, Valázquez, Goya and, above all, El Greco, as the embodiment of the "spirit of painting." The exhibition presented by the Museo del Prado features works created with burnt gunpowder on canvas in which the Chinese artist ponders about the qualities that define the art of his predecessors. The exhibition includes works created by Guo-Qiang during his residency at the Salón de Reinos and is accompanied by the gaze that filmmaker Isabel Coixet captured in a documentary produced by the Museo del Prado.
