The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Quito, Presents Spin-Off: Exhibition of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection

The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Quito hosts the exhibition titled "Spin-off," curated by Lorenzo Balbi. The exhibition consists of over 65 works from the private collection of contemporary Italian art of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. The presentation of this collection for the first time in South America represents a milestone for the Fundación Museos de la Ciudad. "Spin-Off" showcases the research and reflections raised by artists—most of them from Europe and the US—in the last decades; whose practices have expanded, established and legitimized many of today's contemporary art discourses. Artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn (Switzerland, 1957), who has established installation through the use of common materials as a political gesture; Cindy Sherman (USA, 1954), a photographer whose work constantly questions the role of women in history and in today's society; and Douglas Gordon (Scotland, 1966), who relies on video performances to critically reflect on memory, among many other renowned artists. As part of this exhibition, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo—conceived as a dynamic space for the collective production of knowledge, and on its way to becoming the first museum that specializes in Ecuadorian contemporary art—is committed in a serious and sustained manner to reflect on the need to collect and create a memory of contemporary art. Such initiative is an important opportunity for the Ecuadorian public to be exposed to important works by contemporary artists from outside the continent. The Fondazione Sandredtto Re Rebaudengo was established in 1995, in Turin, by contemporary art collector Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. The collection consists of works that, because of their content and aesthetic languages, are referents of contemporary art at the international level. One of the main goals of the foundation is to promote an understanding of the major currents in contemporary art. In addition to presenting the public with a program of exhibitions that cover different visual arts manifestations, the institution also relies on educational programs and artistic activities such as lectures, discussions with artists, curators and art critics from both Italian and foreign institutions. The exhibition will run from August 1 – November 30, 2015. The activities are open to the public and free or charge.
