Contemporary Arts Center Reopening on July 1, 2020 With New Site-Responsive Commissions by Tania Candiani
In conjunction with the public reopening on July 1, 2020 the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) in Cincinnati will present an exhibition of new, site-responsive works by Mexico City-based artist Tania Candiani that explores the history of mechanization and labor and reasserts female voices within the male-dominated narrative of American industry. On the centennial of the 19th Amendment, Candiani’s exhibition opens up timely conversations about labor, progress, and women’s place in history. Originally scheduled to open in April 2020, Sounding Labor, Silent Bodies will be on view July 1, 2020 through January 17, 2021.
Bringing together new film, sound, and sculpture by Candiani with historical ephemera from the city’s archives, Sounding Labor, Silent Bodies investigates and reimagines Cincinnati’s Industrial Expositions that took place between 1870 and 1888. The product of two years of archival research, Candiani’s exhibition responds to several elements of Cincinnati’s own history as an epicenter of industry and integrates the work of local artisans and vocalists. Key works include a filmed performance by Cincinnati’s MUSE Women’s Choir that evokes the sounds of 19th century machinery, as well as sculptural works made in collaboration with Cincinnati fabricators. These works will be showcased alongside archival lithographs from the city’s Industrial Expositions, which capture the era and events that informed this project.
The exhibition was curated by by Kate Bonansinga, Director, School of Art in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning in collaboration with Amara Antilla, Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Center.
