The building designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers will be closed for total renovation from the end of 2023 until late 2026. The building will be fully closed during the works, which are expected to last three years, to allow the removal of asbestos throughout the building and full refurbishment to meet current safety, technical and energy standards, as well as accessibility requirements for people with disabilities.
The public information library will be moved to a temporary location in Paris during the works to allow it to continue serving the public. “These works will guarantee the future of the Centre Pompidou. In concrete terms, our aim is to preserve our key masterpiece, the building itself, which has not undergone any major renovation since 1977. This work is essential if it is to remain an international icon of modernity and contemporary architecture attracting thousands of visitors every year. I am delighted with the decision, which will allow us to celebrate our 50th anniversary in style and to take the Centre into the 21st century. This is something we have already been working toward through several ambitious projects...” explained Serge Lasvignes, President of the Centre Pompidou.
