Edwin Sánchez, X Premio Luis Caballero

On July 10, Bogota’s City Hall, through the Instituto Distrital de las Artes (IDARTES), announced Edwin Sánchez as winner of the X Luis Caballero Award. Sánchez exhibits his project titled “Torcido” at the Galería Santa Fe, since February 13, 2020.
“Torcido” is an installation that thinks about the phenomena typical of the tolerance zone of the Santa Fe neighborhood in Bogotá. The project was developed in two stages: the first, a video installation, described by Sánchez as: “he thought of the rhetoric of progress used by urban planners who repeat themselves over and over when it comes to marketing deteriorated spaces for gentrification purposes.” A large-scale text in English was projected on one of the Galería Santa Fe walls, with promotional phrases from the ATRIO project; at the back of the room, a video of the city center was taken from an image bank. The second stage is a file displayed in the space with material that the artist has collected for years, raised from the city’s tolerance zone. In obtained rubble structures, he built modules from this archive made up of objects, documents, situations, and stories from the Santa Fe neighborhood.
The jury made up by Carolina Ponce de León, Santiago Rueda, and Juan David Laserna, highlighted, in the award ceremony, based on the evaluation criteria of the call and the relevance of the proposal concerning space or intervened environment: “For research that includes nearby places and contexts: large urban projects, gentrification, which today goes hand in hand with art life, labor and sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, and violence, the staging of desire, crime, of which the artist has witnessed, who manages to exhibit these strata, showing how and where they collide and adjoin. Furthermore, associating the Santa Fe neighborhood with the Galería Santa Fe and its history indicates a dislocation of narratives of a popular space (the marketplace) by a cultural building that will surely transform the social and economic dynamics of the urban environment over time.”
Edwin Sánchez, awarded with the Premio X Luis Caballero, obtained a stimulus of COP 45,000,000 and the commission for an unpublished work to be exhibited at the Galería Santa Fe in 2021.
