On exhibition at the London National Gallery, enigma of the ?Lady in a Fur Wrap? by El Greco, will be probed.

During the first ever London retrospective of works by Doménikos Theotokópoulos (1541-1614), known as El Greco, the institution will try to demonstrate that ¿Lady in a Fur Wrap¿ is the only portrait of a real woman painted by the artist. The authenticity of this 1577 painting has been long doubted due to its marked departure from El Greco¿s habitual religious works; it has even been attributed to one of his daughters. The London National Gallery will subject the painting to X-Ray tests in order to settle the question of whether is was truly painted by the Crete-born artist. ¿Lady in a Fur Wrap¿ underwent the same kinds of tests some years ago, but new technological developments make possible a more conclusive resolution. The National Gallery exhibition is titled ¿El Greco¿ and brings together 80 paintings. It opened on February 11 and will remain open until May 23.
