The 12th edition of the SACO Contemporary Art Biennial is currently taking place in the Atacama Desert, known as the driest place on Earth, and will run until September 14, 2025. This edition, titled Dark Ecosystems, explores the connection between art and science, with a focus on extremophile organisms and their remarkable ability to survive in extreme conditions.
The event brings together national and international artists in a program that includes exhibitions, workshops, and talks, held across cultural and unconventional venues in both Antofagasta and San Pedro de Atacama. One of the main exhibition sites is the former Molinera in Antofagasta.
Supported by Escondida | BHP and funded by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, the biennial seeks to promote direct engagement between artists and the public through its diverse programming.
Led by Dagmara Wyskiel, the initiative draws inspiration from biological resilience and the hidden forms of life that thrive in harsh environments—highlighting the importance of exploring the invisible, both in the world around us and within ourselves.
