Doris Salcedo wins Sharjah Biennial Award 2023

The Sharjah Art Foundation, a non-profit governmental institution belonging to one of the United Arab Emirates, awarded Doris Salcedo the Sharjah Biennial Prize 2023. The same distinction was also given to the French-Moroccan artist Bouchra Khalili and the Canadian Hajra Waheed. The Sharjah Biennial had its first edition in 1993, and on this occasion, 150 works by artists from all over the world were presented under the theme "Thinking Historically in the Present", under the curatorship of Hoor Al Qasimi.
In the framework of the biennial, Doris Salcedo exhibits "Desarraigados” (Uprooted), an installation in which dry tree branches and roots become the inputs to build a home that metaphorized the dramas of migration and uprooting. ArtNexus in 1998 published a review of Salcedo's “Unland” series, in which Rhea Anastas postulated that "Salcedo alludes to Robert Smithson's non-site in her title ‘Unland.’ Simply put, the non-site is not a location but a process. The substitution of the prefix also references the uncanny. The German word ‘unheimlich’ defines the familiar turned foreign and haunted." This same sense of an unsettling and mysterious non-place applies to "Desarraigados".
Apart from Doris Salcedo's presence at the Sharjah Biennial, the Latin American representation included Colombian artists Laura Huertas Millán and Carolina Caycedo, Cuban María Magdalena Campos Pons, and Cuban-American Coco Fusco, Marisol Méndez from Bolivia, Dominican Joiri Minaya and, finally, Lavia Gandolfo and Ángela Ponce from Peru.
The Sharjah Biennial will be on view until June 11, 2013, in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
