Organizers at the Venice Biennale have confirmed the dates for the 55th edition of the event scheduled for 2013 and have also appointed the Biennale's new Director.
The Biennale will be held from June 1 through November 24 of 2013. Italian Curator and Art Critic, Massimiliano Gioni, has been entrusted with the Direction of the event.
Massimiliano Gioni is Associate Director at the New Museum in New York City and Art Director at the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in Milan. Gioni has been closely associated with several international biennials. He was in charge of organizing 10,000 Lives, an exhibition presented at the Eighth Gwangju Biennale in South Korea (2010) that was very well received by the public. Additionally, Gioni organized the section The Zone at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.
The Biennale is an international exhibition of contemporary art. The Venice Film Festival and the International Architecture Exhibition are also part of the same event. In spite of several pauses as result of social and political problems, the Venice Biennale has been celebrated since 1895. The last edition took place in 2011 and the Director entrusted with event on that occasion was Bice Curiger from Switzerland.
