Diego Bruno

Artist Diego Bruno received the Illy SustainArt Award for his work Location. Presented by Carlos Urroz at the illycaffè space, the award celebrates its seventh edition at the ARCO art fair. The main objective of the award is to identify and recognize the work by an artist presented in the Solo Projects: Focus Latino America section. It consists of 15,000.00 euros in cash plus the possibility of presenting a project to create a cup for the Illy art collection. During the last two decades the famous coffee cup collection has included creations by important international contemporary art figures as well as by some young emerging talents. Formed by Jesús Carrillo, Director of Cultural Programs at the Departamento de Actividades Públicas of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía; João Fernandez, Assistant Director of the Conservation, Research and Dissemination Center of the Museo; and Carlo Bach, Artistic Director of Illy Caffé, the jury has pointed to Diego Bruno's ability to achieve an intersection between historic and personal memory in an audiovisual piece that the they have described as "modern archeology." The installation presents in two screens with two different languages—visual and written—a space affected by a traumatic past. This duality of languages creates a conflict with viewers as they cannot synthetize the information and are led to choose one language over the other. The illy SustainArt Award began in ARCOmadrid in 2008, when it was first received by Brazilian artists Matheus Rocha-Pitt. In its second edition, the award was presened to Avinash Veeraraghavan, one of the young talents from India. The 2010 edition of the event gave the award to Mexican artist Camilo Ontiveros and once again, in 2011, a Brazilian was awarded, the young artist Camilo Ontiveros and, once again in 2011, a Brazilian received the award, Andre Komatzu. The award for this last 2013 edition went to the dui Julia & Víctor Costales-Tometti for his work entitled Anarquismo Mágico (Magical Anarchism).
