Delcy Morelos at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo - CAAC

The show Profundis by Colombian artist Delcy Morelos opened last May 28 and will be open to the public until March 9, 2025 at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) in Seville.
Delcy Morelos (Tierralta, Colombia, 1967) began her artistic career as a painter working on traditional surface, although she was interested in the use of red. For her, red was part of herself, saying “it emanated from my fingers.” Later, she began to explore with materials such as soil, which led her to other tones such as blue, gray, green, brown, since, depending on certain chemicals, soil can vary in color. For example, the red color in the ground depends on the amount of iron it contains, the same element that makes blood red.
Morelos investigates mythological cosmovisions, particularly pre-Columbian ones, alluding to the interconnection between human beings, animals, plants, spirits and Mother Earth. From this perspective of a sacred and mythical nature, the artist proposes to take care of and respect the balance of ecosystems. Morelos uses materials such as soil, sand, among others, to design large-format multisensory structures through geometric minimalism. In this way, viewers are surrounded by pyramids, caves, thresholds, and other features that generate a broader understanding of reality, of the dimensions of the earth, its power, and the spiritual, energetic and cosmic connotations that go beyond the visible.
In Profundis she suggests a connection with the historical memory through the aroma of the earth, as an ancestral element, where plants such as tobacco, corn, tomato and potatoes, introduced in Europe from America, return invading the exhibition space of the Zona Monumental of the monastery of the Cartuja with their perfumes and textures.
