Daros-Latinamericana in Rio de Janeiro

In January 2008 the Daros-Latinamericana collection will open a new center in Rio de Janeiro. The space will be dedicated to showing contemporary Latin art and to the promotion of the exchange of thinking and ideas related with contemporary art, culture and the recent history of the world. The collection appointed the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha as designer of the Casa Daros complex in Rio de Janeiro. Besides its exposition salons, Casa Daros will be composed of a library, an auditorium, residences, a cafeteria, a restaurant and a museum shop. The complex, located in a 19th century building, previously the possession of a charitable entity, was originally constructed as an orphanage, and center of help for women, and during the last decades it functioned as an Anglo-American school. Casa Daros has a total of 39,370 square feet and is located in Botafogo. Daros-Latinamericana, founded in 2000, is dedicated to the collection and promotion of contemporary Latin American art. In 2001 a new site was opened in Zurich, Switzerland, to show the recognized collection that now contains almost 1000 works of some 100 artists. The Casa Daros team is made up of Sebastian Lopez, artistic director; Eugenio Valdes, Director of artistic education and research; Isabella Rosado, general administrator and Helena Zouain, administrative assistant.
