From October 8, 2022, to February 26, 2023, "Damián Ortega: Expanded Vision" will be on view at Centro Botín, Santander, Spain. The Mexican artist presents for the first time nine hanging sculptures.
Ortega reflects on technology, geology, architecture, and literature. His approach to the work of art interrogates the ways of perceiving, inhabiting, and relating to objects and public space. The works float, transforming the exhibition gallery space and challenging traditional sculpture by abandoning the pedestal.
Some of the works that will be presented are Cosmic Thing (2002) which was built from the fragments of a Volkswagen Beetle, a symbol of the industrial era. Also, one of the most common automobiles in Mexico City and a representative of the democratization of consumption and the black automotive market. Likewise, Polvo Estelar (2016) is composed of natural and synthetic materials that create an ecosystem from a center. In a ready-made manner, Ortega collected each of the parts to give them a new meaning.
The exhibition also includes ALIAS, Damián Ortega's publishing house that publishes fundamental texts on contemporary art that have been out of print or have not been translated into Spanish, as well as those written by artists.
