Cruz-Diez: Bidimensional Research, Works 1959-2015

Space Expression presents Cruz-Diez Bidimensional Research. Works 1959-2015, featuring a selection of works representative of Carlos Cruz-Diez' two-dimensional investigations. The exhibition will remain open to the public through February 1, 2016. "The graphic arts are an essential instrument for the experimentation and the development of concepts that gave structure to my chromatic discourse." In his series Couleurs Additives, begun in 1959, Cruz-Diez was able to isolate the optic mixture formed by two or more colors, in order to generate new ranges that shift according to the intensity of light and the viewer's distance. In 1963, Cruz-Diez's investigations resulted in what he called Induction Chromatique. In these works, various chromatic ranges appear and disappear depending on the direction or intensity of the light source and the angle of observation. These are virtual colors, but their existence is as real as that of pigment. "My graphic works are the development and unveiling of color coming out of the traditional static plane and into the dynamic, mutating space where color expresses itself in reality," the artist says. The selection of works on exhibit includes a number of artist's proofs, unusual and valuable materials, unique testimonies signed by the artist with the purpose of validating the print run of their edition.
