From September 16 to November 21, the Sala Picasso of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid will host a selection of the 73 most disturbing images by Madrid photographer Chema Madoz. The works presented at Cruelty are far from the friendly smile with which Madoz's photographs are sometimes received. Some are iconic images of his work, others have been seen less often, and some are shown for the first time. All of them seek to reveal a disturbing aspect that results from their particular setting: a cruel, perhaps sinister, element that bursts in when we change our gaze and opens a new horizon in the work of this creator.
Each work will be joined by an elaborated or rescued text that can be read in the QR codes next to the photographs and in the exhibition catalog. For the occasion, a catalog has been published in co-production with La Fábrica, including 102 photos with texts by Oliva María Rubio, Juan Barja, and Patxi Lanceros, the latter two curators of the show.
José María Rodríguez Madoz (Madrid 1958), known artistically as Chema Madoz, is a photographer with a unique and very personal style who has a career spanning four decades. His creations are based on black and white photos of seemingly everyday objects that play with visual memory and surrealism.
In 2000 he was awarded the National Photography Award. That year he received the PhotoEspaña Award and the Higasikawa Overseas Photographer Award from the Higasikawa PhotoFestival in Japan.
