CONTEXTILE 2022
Contextile invites all artists, national and international, to submit artistic works for the competition of the International Exhibition (competitive), integrated into the schedule of the 6th Edition, Contextile 2022 - Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art, which takes place in the city of Guimarães, Portugal, from September 3 to October 30, 2022.
The Contextile 2022 Biennial focuses its activities on the thematic concept that will be transversal to all the headings of its curriculum.
The competitive International Exhibition will consist of 50 works by 50 artists. Two works will also be accepted and selected for the public space. The Jury will award an Acquisition Award of €6,000 and Honorable Mentions at the opening of the biennial. The 50 works from the international exhibition might also be selected, during the biennial, for the ATP Acquisition Award and the ASM Acquisition Award, for an amount of €2,500 each.
The works will be selected by an International Jury, composed of Lala de Dios (curator and textile teacher), Janis Jefferies (visual arts teacher and curator), Monika Grasiené-Zaltê (textile artist and curator), Orenzio Santi (teacher and textile artist), Claudia Melo (artistic director of Contextile 2022).
Those interested may compete with new creations or recent works until March 5, 2022, all artistic expressions within the visual arts are accepted. The proposals and works in competition must be around the textile element, by concept, theme, construction, technique, or material. They must be works of high creativity, originality, and technical competence.
Works with a free theme or those that are developed from the thematic concept will be accepted.
CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION AND REGISTRATION
1. All artists over 18 years of age, of any nationality, individually or collectively, can participate.
2. Each artist may submit up to two works, and only one will be selected.
3. Works submitted to the competition must be recent original creations or presented to the public after 2019.
4. Entry form (download: www.contextile.pt), filled out before March 5, 2022, to the e-mail: biennial@contextile.pt.
5. The application form, CV, portfolio, and any other accompanying documentation must be submitted in English or Portuguese.
6. The application must:
(a) specify in the subject line: Contextil 2022 International Exhibition.
b) attach photographs of the works in competition, summary, and details, in color (maximum 10), with good quality (300 dpi, not JPEG Format with a maximum size of 5 MB)
c) photographs, designs, or sketches of the works must clearly show the scale of the works.
d) attach an artistic CV (maximum 1 page)
e) attach an updated Portfolio (maximum five pages) or link to the website or blog.
7. The maximum size of a two-dimensional work is 300 cm (height) x 300 cm (width).
8. The maximum size of a three-dimensional artwork is approximately 200 cm (height) x 200 cm (width) x 200 cm (depth).
9. The maximum weight per artwork must be: 30 Kg.
10. The costs and charges for shipping and return of the artwork are the sole responsibility of the selected artist.
11. All selected works must necessarily include the appropriate set-up instructions and mechanisms.
12. The candidate artist agrees, by submitting the works, to assign to the CONTEXTILE organization the rights to publish the images.
13. All proposals must be wholly original and unpublished (it is the artist's responsibility to assume any liability arising from third-party claims of copyright and related rights).
SELECTION PROCESS
1. The works will be selected by an international Jury composed of five members recognized in textile and contemporary art.
2. The Jury is responsible for selecting 50 artworks by 50 artists + 2 outdoor works.
3. The results will be published on the CONTEXTILE website (www.contextile.pt) on April 12, 2022.
4. Selected artists will be notified to the indicated email and registered in the application.
5. The Jury will oversee awarding the Acquisition Prize * and three Mentions, which will be announced at the opening of CONTEXTILE 2022, on September 3, 2022.
* The selected work will be included in the collection of the Platform for Arts and Creativity / City of Guimarães.
