Construyendo Tamayo, 1922-1937

On the occasion of the 114th anniversary of the birth of Rufino Tamayo, the Museo Tamayo de Arte Contemporáneo is presenting Construyendo Tamayo, 1922-1937, an exhibition centered on the Oaxaca-born artist's early, formative period, when style was defined. The show, curated by Karen Cordero, establishes a dialog with the various modern art proposals in Mexico during the 1920s and 1930s, connecting the beginnings of the artist's aesthetic universe with some of his colleagues, such as David Alfaro Siqueiros, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Adolfo Best Maugard, María Izquierdo y José Clemente Orozco, among others. Construyendo Tamayo, 1922-1937 features more than 30 works by 20 artists, as well as 66 works by Tamayo including oils, drawings, graphic works, watercolors, and books. The works come from 25 national and international collections. Many of the Tamayo works on exhibit have never been seen by the public or are seldom displayed, as is the case of his 1922 project for a mosaic. The exhibition will remain open to the public through January, 2014.
