Brazilian Take over Times Square

Beginning on Saturday August 1, the large digital billboards that decorate the tourist epicenter of New York City, Times Square, will be taken over by the Brazilian artistic duo OsGemeos. Seconds before the beginning of each of the next 31 midnights, a series of 30-second videos titled "Parallel Connection" will be shown on the monumental screens of Times Square for a total period of three minutes. Of variable formats, the videos are produced by brothers Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo, in collaboration with Estudio Birdo, one of the leading independent animation studios in Brazil. The event will be co-curated by the Lehmann Maupin Gallery. The project is part of the "Midnight Moment" an initiative by Times Square Arts that began in 2012 with support from the Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC). So far several artists have participated, including Yoko Ono and Tracey Emin, and the "Screen Tests" by Andy Warhol. According to Sherry Dobbin, director of Times Square Arts and organizer of the Midnight Moment project, "The wonderful rich colors of Osgemeos' characters catch our attention. They represent diversity in a way that encourages us to look at ourselves, at our family and friends."
