Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of René Portocarrero

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Cuba celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Cuban artist René Portocarrero (1912-1985) with the exhibition entitled René Portocarrero, the City, its Women, and Traditional Celebrations. The exhibition will remain open to the public until April 22, 2012. According to María Elena Jubrias-an artist who accompanied him through his artistic adventures-the exhibition includes 30 of the most emblematic paintings by Portocarrero created between 1939 and 1984. Visitors are greeted by a harlequin painted in 1951 that measures 163 × 106.5 cm (64.2 × 41.9 in). Other works included in the exhibition are: Carnavales (Carnivals), Interiores del Cerro (Interiors of the Hill), Santa Bárbara, and Ciudad en Rojo (City in Red). Portocarrero is regarded as one of the most important representatives of Cuban art. He studied at the Academia de Artes Plásticas San Alejandro, where he completed studies to continue pursuing a career that had been self-taught until then.
