In 2011, Soledad Lorenzo announced the definitive closing of her gallery, which eventually took place in 2012. Throughout the more than 26 years of activity of the gallery, Lorenzo kept the unsold works that were most dear to her. Without being a collector in the strict sense of the word, she gathered a notable group of more than 80 artists. Manuel Borja-Villel, director of the Museo Reina Sofía, and the prominent gallery owner signed a deposit-commodate contract of cultural possessions in favor of the institution. The act was attended by Spain's Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, José Ignacio Wert; the State of Culture Secretary, José María Lassalle; and the President of the Real Patronato of the Museo Reina Sofía, Guillermo de la Dehesa; along with prominent gallery owners and artists who have closely collaborated with Lorenzo. Along with works by renowned authors like Antoni Tàpies and Miquel Barceló, there are also works by US artists like Julian Schnabel and Robert Longo, among others. Another group of works that stand out in the collection belong to artists from the next generation like Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Juan Uslé and Victoria Civera. Also noteworthy of mention are works by younger artists like Sergio Prego and Adrian Juliá, which will allow the Museum to expand the part of its collection focused on the current century. From the 89 authors whose works are included in the deposit, 36 that had never before been present in the collection of the MNCARS include: Martin Kersels, Eric Fischl, George Condo, David Salle, Jürgen Klauke, Pipilotti Rist, Sam Taylor-Wood and Adriana Varejao. Prominent among the Latin American artists are Sandra Gamarra and Jorge Pineda. The Museo Reina Sofía thus receives this generous gesture by one of the most important gallery owners in Europe, consisting of 406 works by 89 artists, predominantly paintings (155) and photographs (93). There are also sculptures and installations (37), one hundred works on paper (drawings and prints) and audiovisual works (17). The five year deposit may be extended and Lorenzo has promised to include the museum in her will as the beneficiary of her collection.
