Clemencia Echeverri and Felipe Arturo, Prizes for Creation 2019 "Call to commission artistic interventions at Fragmentos
Since 31 August, Duelo by Clemencia Echeverri and Antibalas by Felipe Arturo have been on exhibit at the Fragmentos, Espacio de Arte y Memoria art space created by Doris Salcedo as an anti-monument.
Duelo ‘Grief’, by Clemencia Echeverri, is a video-installation of nine synchronized images that, united on three sound levels, embrace the space and evoke an endless grief that is still happening in Colombia as a consequence of enforced disappearances. The artist remarked: “The project intends to take up and reconfigure the exhibition space to the end of summoning a moment of grief.” In this vein, besides the video-installation, found on a table within the space is “The Book of Searching,” a handwritten publication that is there to receive the testimonies of those grieving due to the crime of enforced disappearance. This document will remain stored in the exhibition space’s archives.
Antibalas ‘Bulletproof’, by Felipe Arturo, is an installation made up of twenty-one (bulletproof) suits created using various techniques and materials that range from steel to textiles and even ceramics and sand. The suits can be worn by visitors during their trip to the Fragments exhibit. The artist commented: “The work appeals to the way in which collective traumas are stored in the body, in our postures and behaviors in the collective space, just like the transformations of domestic and public spaces after decades, if not centuries, of a complex framework of military, class, gender and ethnic conflicts.”
Fragmentos, located at Carrera 7 # 6b-30 in Bogotá, has made itself available as an open physical space to receive the multiple memories of the conflict. Its objective is not to generate a unique look at national history, but to house multiple readings that promote difficult, provocative and, ultimately, reflective dialogs. In this way present and future generations of artists show works that rework the memories of the conflict and that, through them, allow the construction of a collective vision of the future.
