Claudia Zapata. Associate Curator of Latino Art Blanton Museum of Art

The Blanton Museum of Art in Austin created for the first time an Associate Curatorial position for Latino Art, the creation of this new position is part of the Advancing Latinx Art in Museums program, which was announced earlier this year by four leading foundations (Mellon, Ford, Getty and Terra). This initiative provided $5 million for the creation of 10 curatorial positions focused on LatinX art. Joining this project, The Blanton Museum appointed Claudia Zapata to the position.
Zapata will be one of the few people in the United States with a position and role that focuses specifically on researching, preseeing and leading LatinX art exhibition projects. Zapata has an extensive curatorial background, most recently serving as Assistant Curator for the landmark exhibition "Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now", curated by E. Carmen Ramos at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Zapata also has extensive academic experience, with an M.A. in Art History from The University of Texas (Austin) and a Ph.D. in Art History from Southern Methodist University's "ASC/a: Rhetorics of Art, Space, and Culture" program.
Ten institutions have benefited from the Advancing LatinX Art in Museums program, including El Museo del Barrio, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin.
