Host City Manifesta 11 in 2016 Zurich

Since the birth of Manifesta during the beginning of the 1990s, its mission has been to explore the cultural topography of Europe. Every two years, organizers find a new city or region in which to insert the event. In earlier editions of the event, Manifesta has selected peripheral regions or highly transited ones as the host places. In 2014, for the first time ever Manifesta 10 will have a historical institution hosting the event: the State Hermitage Museum in the city of Saint Petersburg in the Russian Federation.

The board of Directors of Manifesta has just announced that Zurich will become the guest city for Manifesta 11, in 2016.

For years to come, the dynamic and complex urban environment in Zurich will surely offer a highly meaningful social, political and artistic scene for Manifesta 11.

Zurich has a long history of artistic and intellectual liberalism as result of having been the place from which several revolutionary political and artistic movements emerged. During periods of historic upheaval in Europe, Zurich offered asylum to intellectuals. Economically and technologically speaking, this Swiss city is one of the most advanced places in the world. A rich and fertile urban stage that develops rapidly, Zurich will offer Manifesta 11 the chance to explore critical global social problems associated with the processes of urbanization, space and urban society. It is a place that encourages reflection of the role art plays in the development of such processes.
