Cinthia Marcelle: A Conjunction of Factors

A Conjunction of Factors delves into the work by Cinthia Marcelle (b. 1974, Belo Horizonte). The exhibition curated by Isobel Whitelegg presents the desire to disorganize the hierarchies and binary oppositions of our daily interactions with a concern for reimagining the dynamics of collectivity.
Marcelle’s recurring series, made from 1999 to the present, across different media arouses associations and connections through similar gestures and radically different scales. Her series does not begin and end but fade and emerge and can be shown together or held in reserve.
The exhibition also focuses on a common practice of Marcelle’s: involving participants from different backgrounds—from laborers and musicians to people she meets in her day-to-day life—in her artistic production. The actions carried out by these collaborators, which the artist photographs and films, fluctuate between the staged and the spontaneous and seem both fiction and reality simultaneously. Along with the use of materials and colors that evoke specific contexts, the implication and representation of others in Marcelle’s work allude to the hierarchies of labor, class, and race that condition our daily interactions and the prevailing social and political order.
The expression ‘a conjunction of factors’ is commonly used to explain how significant events occur—not because of a single cause but through an unpredictable interaction between multiple actors and forces. Emphasizing Marcelle’s conjunctive approach to practice and authorship, the exhibition features work produced as a solo artist, with Tiago Mata Machado and Jean Meeran, and in partnership with the online platform aarea.co.
