Cildo Meireles 7th Velázquez Visual Arts Award

The Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles was recently honored with the Velázquez Visual Arts Award, which grants 90.450 Euros and includes a presentation of the artist¿s works in an exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. Cildo Meireles (Río de Janeiro, 1948) is considered one of the most relevant conceptual artists, who, since the late 1960´s has created sculptures and installations incorporating elements of time, space and the participation of the public. His work has been exhibited, among others, at the MoMA in New York, the MACBA in Barcelona and Tate Modern in London. The Velázquez Visual Arts Award was created with the means to encourage the ties between culture and artistic creation and gives recognition to the career of a creator in the visual arts field, either from Spain or the Iber-American community. The artist may select another creator under 35 years of age as recipient of the Velázquez Grant, provided with 30.000 Euros during a whole year. The jury leaded by Ramón González de Amezúa, Director of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, was also composed by: Manuel Borja-Villel, Director of the Museo Reina Sofía; Miguel Zugaga, Director of the Museo del Prado; Luis Gordillo, the former awarded artist; Antonio Franco, Director of Museo Extremeño de Arte Contemporáneo and José Texeira Coelho, Chief of Conservation for Museo de Arte de São Paulo; Angel Kalenberg, Art Critic, among others.
