The president of the Board of Trustees of the Museo de Arte de Ponce, María Luisa Ferré Rangel, announced the appointment of Cheryl Hartup as director of the cultural institution.
She will begin leading the Museo de Arte de Ponce on November 1 and has an extensive professional career of more than 30 years dedicated to the service of art museums and their communities. Until her appointment, she served as curator of the academic and Latin American and Caribbean art programs at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon.
The new director has close ties to the Museo de Arte de Ponce, serving as Chief Curator for seven years. During her tenure at the Museum, she contributed to formalizing collaborative alliances with the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, the Tate Britain in London, and the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. Under her management in the curatorial area, the Museum acquired 700 works currently included in the institution's art collection. In addition, she actively participated in the Museum's expansion and renovation project, which culminated in its reopening in 2010. She is also recognized in the Puerto Rican cultural and artistic environment for her work in important cultural institutions.
The new director said, "I am returning to what was my passion and an honor to serve for many years, to reconnect with colleagues with whom I worked on important projects for the institution, and to meet others whose work is equally commendable. Together with the team, we will focus on serving our communities, paying special attention to the most disadvantaged populations. We will forge new alliances with local and international institutions to raise awareness of the valuable cultural heritage of the Museum's collection. Likewise, we will work ceaselessly in the reconstruction of our galleries to have them once again open for the enjoyment of all," reiterated Cheryl Hartup. She added that a plan would be announced soon on the renovation of the facilities after the damage caused by the impact of the January 2020 earthquake.
The Museo de Arte de Ponce is a non-profit organization founded in 1959 by Luis A. Ferré (1904-2003) and accredited since 1987 by the American Alliance of Museums. The institution is recognized for its significant collection of European art, which offers an interesting panorama of Western art from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. For more than six decades, the Museum has excelled in research, conservation, and education.
