On June 5, 2021, the Department of Isère’s opened the 11th Museum in the south of Grenoble in the town of Vif. Set in one of the Champollion family’s former residences, the new Museum stands as a tribute to the beginnings of modern Egyptology in France.
The Museum is dedicated to the work of the Champollion brothers and the birth of Egyptology and acquired by the Department of Isères from the descendants of Jacques-Joseph Champollion-Figeac, elder brother of the Egyptologist. The family property in Vif has been since 2016 the object of an ambitious architectural landscaping and museographic renovation project to enhance the components of the estate to accommodate all the functions of a modern museum. It is based on a largely unpublished fund with strong heritage consistency.
Protected as a Historic Monument, the property bears witness to the states of the two brothers in Dauphiné. All in these places signals their presence and maintains their memory: the shades of the park that they appreciated, the manor house and its interior decorations, the furniture, the art objects, and the personal effects of the two men kept by the descendants.
