Celeste Mayorga. MAZORCA 2024 Fellowship

The MAZORCA Fellowship is pleased to announce that the Institut français has named Celeste Mayorga, the residency fellowship winner at the Cité des Arts. The residency will run from July to October 2024, followed by an exhibition at íNTIMO (La Nueva Fábrica project space), Guatemala.
Celeste Mayorga works between activism, feminism, social sciences, and sexual dissidence. For several years, she was an activist, which led her to study her territory and the ancestral knowledge of her lineage to defend life, water, and women, among others.
The project "NO FUE JUSTO" was born from the news she received from her family that implied forced disappearance as a structural effect of violence against women in Guatemala. Mayorga explains, “Between December 2022 and January 2023, I discovered Europe for the first time, Paris in particular. During this trip, I received hard news from my family: forced disappearance, as a structural effect of violence in Guatemala against women, adolescents, and girls, had touched us. This time, it was us; it was them, the women of my roots. As a therapist and visual artist, Mayorga rethought the idea of justice and how to seek it. The work, which is a performance intervention for the healing and justice of women, aims to generate encounters between women survivors of all types of violence. From these, they create artistic actions of what has not been fair to process, transform, and resignify the pain.
