Carrington and Gerzso

Mexican painter Leonora Carrington celebrates her 94th birthday with an exhibition at the Centro Cultural Estación Indianilla, in Mexico City, that will also include works by visual artist Günther Gerzso (1915-2000). It will remain open to the public until June 11. The exhibition includes 10 sculptures produced between 2008 and 2010 that are part of a group of 45 artworks that the multifaceted Carrington -who is also a writer- created during the last twenty years thanks to an initiative spearheaded by Isaac Masri. The medium size sculptures are inspired by fantastic beings and by her love for animals and nature. Some examples of this work include, Rostro Aguila (Eagle Face), Dama y Zorro (Lady and Fox), Barca con Chango (Boat with Monkey), Dama con Tocado (Lady with Headdress), Nigromante y Silla (Necromancer and Chair). Also on display are 21 sculptures by Gerzso, six of which are medium format pieces that were previously shown in the 1995 collective exhibition, entitled Freedom in Bronze that brought together works by five Mexican artists -including Carrington- at the Paseo de la Reforma Avenue. Created in 1998, the other 15 works are abstract pieces that Mexican poet David Huerta coined with names such as Sexual Fissures, Mesopotamic Penetrations, and The Instruments of Desire.
