Carolina Ponce de León

The Ministry of Culture of Colombia, intent on strengthening the lines of action developed for the past five years by its Arts Directorate—with their positive balance in terms of the promotion of creation, research, and circulation of the visual arts—has appointed Carolina Ponce de León as the Directorate's Visual Arts Advisor. The institution cited Ponce de León's vast experience in a 30-year career as curator critic, and historian, as well as her work as Visual Arts Director at Banco de la República's Luis Ángel Aragón Library between 1984 and 1994, where she created the New Names Program as a space for the promotion and circulation of Colombian art. This was a pioneering initiative at the time, and it was key for the emerging arts cohorts in the 1980s and 1990s. For Carolina Ponce de León, this appointment—at a time of strengthening of public and private institutions in Colombia's culture sector and of professionalization in cultural management, art theory, curatorship, museography, and conservation—is an important challenge and an opportunity to continue working to solidify the arts sector at the national level, from the various fronts in which the Arts Directorate of the Ministry of Culture works.
