Opened on August the 1st, The Flag Project raises 193 works of art over the ice rink at the Rockefeller Center.
At the core of the exhibition, 13 artists with various visual languages such as abstraction, text, contemporary plays on flag iconography were invited. The contributors are Faith Ringgold, Carmen Herrera, Marina Abramović, Sanford Biggers, Jenny Holzer, Christian Siriano, Shantell Martin, Laurie Anderson, Sarah Sze, Hank Willis Thomas, Stephen Powers, KAWS, and Jeff Koons.
The installation encompasses 180 flags that were selected from designs submitted in an open call. While most of the contestants live in New York, several flags come from elsewhere, including Toronto, Houston, and Buenos Aires.
The Flag Project runs until August the 16th at Rockefeller Center, free and open to the public.
