Carlos Cruz-Díez

Every two years, alternating with the Newton Medal for scientific contributions, Color Group awards the Turner Medal, which is given to artists in recognition of their contributions to the understanding of color in the visual arts. This year, the medal recipient is Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. Carlos Cruz-Diez (1923) has lived and worked in Paris since 1960. His investigations on the phenomenon of color began in 1955, with a broad aesthetic focus developed as a participant in the kinetic-art movement, at the time the vanguard of contemporary art in Europe. His investigation—founded on four chromatic conditions: subtractive, additive, inductive, and reflective—has produced a new way of knowing chromatic phenomena, considerably widening the perceptual universe of the arts. Cruz-Diez's works are part of permanent collections at the Tate Modern, London; the University of Essex; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Houston Museum of Art; and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, Germany, among others. The award ceremony was held at the Great Hall, City University, London, on Wednesday April 1st, 2015.
