Carlos Cruz-Diez at Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano

The Chromatic Induction Ring by Carlos Cruz-Diez installed at Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogotá in one of their public squares. In this work, different chromatic ranges appear and disappear continuously, depending on the direction and intensity of the light and the trajectory, angle, and distance of the people walking.
The installation is made up of 408,000 ceramic fragments specially produced in the French factory Emaux de Briare, which since 1970 has worked with the Atelier Cruz-Diez for the artist's monumental projects due to the quality and resistance of its products.
In 1993, Carlos Cruz Diez was invited to the university by Evaristo Obregón, the rector of Universidad Tadeo at that time. The artist was in Bogota participating in the booth of Magdalena Arria's GraphicArt Caracas gallery on the first edition of the Latin American Art Fair (Artfi).
In 2013, the master Cruz-Diez returned to Bogotá and resumed communication with the university, which was developing a plan to improve the institution, including the construction of the plaza integrated into the campus.
The donation of the work was formalized in May 2014 by the board of directors of the Fundación Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano. In 2017, this project was included in the France-Colombia cooperation program (L'Année France-Colombie, 2017).
Carlos Cruz-Diez's work will become an urban reference conceived especially for the university's public spaces. It is installed in the main access plaza and will be a meeting point for students and passersby on campus.
"Works of art in the urban landscape acquire an emotional and affective value, helping to strengthen the citizen's sense of reference, belonging, and pride concerning the heritage environment of their habitat, community, town, city or region," said Cruz-Diez at the beginning of the project.
Carlos Sánchez Gaitán, the rector of the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, mentioned that "this project was achieved with the institutional effort of the university's directors and the support of various people committed to the idea. Finally, after taking the necessary steps to complete this important work for the enjoyment and benefit of the community, this dream is now a reality".
