Carlos Cancio

From the beginning Carlos Cancio´s work has been inspired in the mysticism of the cultures of the world. He works in series, dedicating each one to a different culture or mystical exploration. Gods, Buddhas, deities, harlequins, fauns, entities and majesties thrive in his works. In 2001 he included bananas, among other Caribbean fruits, in the series entitled Tropical Pathway, and from then on, the fabulous fruit continues to appear in his colorful compositions. With this small sculpture of a yellow banana, Carlos Cancio gives us the fruit as an offering symbolizing the Puerto Rican culture and reminds us that Gods are also offered fruits to satisfy their appetite and be content. The banana, scientifically named as Paradise Muse, has been an inspiration for most of this country¿s artists. From Oller to many of the young creators, their art works have been inspired on this fruit. In addition, it has been the main meal for many. For Cancio, as well as for most of us, the tostones or mofongo are meals one dreams of when living abroad. The real size sculpture of a banana is made of yellow fiber-glass. The base is made of volcanic stone. The most important thing about this yellow fruit is that it is inhabited by a goddess or muse who will bring inspiration and take care of us.
