Candida Alvarez: Circle, Point, Hoop at El Museo del Barrio

El Museo del Barrio presents Candida Alvarez: Circle, Point, Hoop, a retrospective exhibition showcasing five decades of the artist's career, from April 24 to August 3, 2025. This exhibition highlights her evolution through painting, drawing, and collage, exploring the interaction between abstraction and figuration, with a focus on her experience as a female artist in a predominantly male environment.
Alvarez, who emerged in the New York art scene in the late 1970s, began with figurative works that reflected her identity as a diasporic artist. In the 1990s, she incorporated conceptual strategies, experimenting with materials and representational systems. The exhibition title, inspired by a 1996 artwork, emphasizes the recurring presence of circles in her work.
The exhibition catalog will include essays by prominent scholars and archival materials that delve deeper into her artistic journey. The exhibition is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Terra Foundation for American Art.
Born in 1955 in Brooklyn, Alvarez has received numerous awards, including the Latinx Artist Fellowship Award (2022), and has exhibited at institutions such as the Whitney Museum and the MCA Chicago. She is currently a professor at The Cooper Union.
