British Airways decided to appraise ten works through Sotheby's for their subsequent sale, with the intention to raise cash in order to avoid a mass dismissal of their employees who, although the English government has protected most of them, these furlough aid measures are close to reducing.
The airline has a collection of contemporary art by mostly British artists such as Damien Hirst, Peter Doig, Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin, Anish Kapoor, and Bridget Riley. The works are usually exhibited in airport lounges; one of these works has been valued at more than £ 1 million. It is not yet known exactly when or in what format the works will be sold.
With many planes unable to fly amid the health crisis and continued travel restrictions around the world, British Airways announced in late April that it could cut up to 12,000 jobs, despite the extension of furlough measures from the government of England.
