Brazil launches first TV channel devoted exclusively to art and culture

The Bandeirantes group launched this week ARTE 1, programming its own productions as well as great author cinema by filmmakers such as Jean Renoir, Wong Kar Wai and Brazil's Karim Aïnouz. ARTE1, Brazil's first TV channel devoted to dance, popular Brazilian music, classical music, film, literature, theater, opera, and the visual arts, will offer cultural content 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The station, first launched experimentally last December via Sky and Claro TV, is available in the basic packages offered by pay channels in Brazil, which translates into 10-million audience. "Our goal is to democratize access to culture via the presentation of quality content", says Rogério Gallo, General Director of ARTE 1.

Two lines of local production will be offered: ARTE 1 and Estilo ARTE 1. The former is a weekly summary of the main cultural events in Brazil and the world.

ARTE 1 Documenta, another program, will broadcast award-winning documentaries such as Edifício Master, Jogo de Cena, Cildo, and Janela da Alma, from Brazil, as well as international productions like Jean-Michel Basquiat and The Man of Aran.

ARTE 1 is available through Sky (channel 101), Net (channel 115), Claro (channel 31), GVT (channel 84), Oi TV (channel 85) and Neo TV.
