After almost twenty years at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Bonnie Clearwater is moving on to a new post as the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale's Director and Curator in Chief. Clearwater will assume this post on September 3rd; until then, she continues to curate Angel Without You, a Tracey Emin exhibition to open next December at MoCA.
Bonnie Clearwater is recognized in the Miami Community for her intense labor for the museum, her interest in establishing an international contemporary art collection, and her efforts to integrate the museum in the surrounding community via art workshops and bringing the museum to schools. However, the expansion planned for the institution, at a cost of $13.5 million, was rejected by voters last year. The museum and the city are still seeking alternatives.
Clearwater declared that the decision to move on was difficult, but is satisfied she is leaving the museum in good hands. The MoCA administrative council will establish a search committee for a new director.
The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale—an 83,000 square foot private institution—hired Clearwater for her expertise and connections with artists, collectors, and other art-world participants across Southern Florida, according to George L. Hanbury II, President and CEO of Nova Southeastern University.
