Masp Biennium Dedicated to Brazilian Histories

MASP recently announced its Biennium programming dedicated to women artists who worked or have worked in Brazil.
Proceeding with the exhibitions dedicated to histories at MASP (Histórias da infância [Histories of Childhood], in 2016, Histórias da sexualidade [Histories of Sexuality], in 2017, Histórias afro-atlânticas [Afro-Atlantic Histories], in 2018, Histórias das mulheres [Women’s Histories], Histórias feministas [Feminist Histories], in 2019, e Histórias da dança [Histories of Dance], in 2020), on the occasion of the country’s independence bicentenary in 2022, MASP will dedicate the 2021 and 2022 programming to Histórias brasileiras [Brazilian Histories].
The biennium will present new, more inclusive, diverse, and plural narratives on the histories of Brazil, with many solo exhibitions and a big collective one, titled Histórias Brasileiras, which will take place in 2022, as well as lectures, workshops, and publications. 2021 is once again dedicated to female artists in MASP’s program (after 2019), yet this time with an exclusive focus on Brazilian artists.
In 2021, as a prelude for this biennium, the programming will cover only individual exhibitions dedicated to women artists, starting with Conceição dos Bugres in the first semester and continuing with Erika Verzutti, Maria Martins, Gertrudes Altschul, and Ione Saldanha during the second half of the year. The Video Room, on the second basement floor, will also house only works by women artists or by artistic collectives which had women as members: throughout the year, there will be exhibitions dedicated to the works by Ana Pi, Teto Preto, Regina Vater, Zahy Guajajara, and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. The latter is the only international name featured on the list.
MASP’s long-term exhibition Acervo em transformação [Picture Gallery in Transformation] remains on display on the second floor. The museum’s collection will be displayed on the iconic glass easels made by the architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) for MASP’s building at Avenida Paulista.
