Montevideo Art Biennial

The first Uruguayan art biennial is set to debut on October 15, 2012. Under the theme "Big Sur", curator Alfons Hug together with co-curators Chilean born Paz Guevara and Uruguayan curator Patricia Betancour will examine the relationship between South America and other five continents through a selection of 50 artists. Alfons Hug is the director of Goethe Institute in Rio de Janeiro and has curated numerous biennials such as the 6th Curitiba Biennial in 2011, the Intituto Italo-Latino Americano Pavilion at the 54 th Venice Biennial and the 25th & 26th Sao Paulo Biennials. The biennial is directed by Gustavo Tavares, visual artist, curator and co-director of Marte Upmarket gallery, Montevideo. Sponsored by Laetitia d¿ Arenberg Foundation, the Biennial of Montevideo is due to be housed in three pavilions in the Rural del Prado, as well as other areas of the city such as The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Figari Museum and the National Museum of Visual Arts.
