Bernardo Laniado-Romero

A committee of experts at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona announced the selection of Ecuadorian Bernardo Laniado-Romero as the museum's new director. Selected after participating in an open call, Laniado-Romero will replace former director Pepe Sierra. Bernardo Laniado-Romero was born in Guayaquil in 1964. He studied at New York University School of Arts and Sciences. In New York City he worked at the Frick Art Reference Library of the Frick Collection and at the Department of European Paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of art. In this museum Liniado-Romero met Carmen Jiménez, who asked him to go with her to work at the Museo Picasso in Malaga. He eventually replaced her as director of that institution and served in that capacity from 2004 to 2008. Bernardo Laniado-Romero was selected from a group of 15 candidates by a jury that included: Rosa María Malet, director of the Fundació Joan Miró; Daniel Giralt-Miracle, board member of the Council for Cultural Affairs in Barcelona, historian and curator; Josep Lluís Alay, Director of Heritage, Museums, and Archives of the City of Barcelona; and Llucià Homs, director of Cultural Sectors Promotion in Barcelona¿alongside colleagues from the Instituit de Cultura in Barcelona; Brigitte Léal, deputy director at the Pompidou Centre in Paris; Vicente Todolí, former director of Tate Modern in London; and Marilyn McCully, art historian and expert on Picasso.
